CACTUS VS. PICKLE

Vacations often bring unexpected moments that stay with us long after the trip ends. On a recent visit to Sunset Beach, North Carolina, my daughter Erin and I stumbled upon one such moment that perfectly illustrated how different perspectives can be—sometimes confusing, sometimes funny, often viewed through a different lens, especially if alcohol is involved.

Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach is a lively spot filled with shops, restaurants, and quirky decorations. One afternoon, Erin, her family, and I walked through, soaking in the sights and sounds.

Erin’s four-year-old daughter, Delilah, ran to a six-foot-tall, friendly, green statue and gave him a big hug. Thinking only of her four-year-old cuteness, I barely registered the decorative figure. When Delilah encountered a similar ornamental display at the next restaurant, she decided to give him a hug, too. Distracted, I heard Erin say something about hugging the "pickle," to her daughter. "There she goes again, hugging that pickle."

Pickle, I thought? The comment made me turn and give this thing a good look. I spent a couple of minutes studying it, then noticed (unlike the pic above, an AI resemblance) ... it had spiny shapes sticking out all over it. Definitely not a pickle, but through her eyes, all I could see was a pickle until I noticed the thorns. I spun around to Erin. "That's not a pickle, it's a cactus!"

She gave me a fuzzy look, her focus filtered by a wine-infused dinner, then took a second to scrutinize the statue. I'm not sure why this struck us as the most hilarious event ever, but we started laughing so hard we cried. We continued strolling through the charming shops of Barefoot Landing, half bent over from laughing so hard, trying not to say the word "pickle" or "that's not a pickle, that's a cactus!" lest we lapse into uncontrollable hysteria. The word "pickle" is destined to forever cause a giggle, our own private joke.

Our perspectives shape what we see and understand. At first, the green statues were clearly cacti, or so I'd thought until she referred to them as pickles. I considered her perspective, thinking maybe I'd been wrong. How awesome it would be if we all embraced the willingness to see through someone else's eyes when confronted with a different perspective.

My takeaways:

  • When something seems odd or confusing, take a moment to consider the options.

  • Instead of assuming, think about the other perspective.

  • Sometimes misunderstandings are opportunities for laughter and bonding.

  • Stay curious! It's okay to let go of our hard-line opinions and consider someone else's viewpoint. Enjoy being surprised!

The pickle-cactus experience reminds me what I see is not always the full story. It's good to pause and think about the situation (or the cactus statue) through someone else's eyes. Also, in retrospect, that cactus statue would've made a mighty fine pickle.
