He Be Makin' Lemonade

In the song "Lemonade" by Forrest Frank, the lyrics encapsulate a powerful message about transforming life's hardships into opportunities for growth and character development. Life is often filled with challenges that can feel overwhelming, but when we allow God to work through these difficulties, they can become the very tools that shape us into better versions of ourselves.

Life is unpredictable. Unexpected hardships shake our foundations. These hardships can manifest as personal struggles, relationship issues, or even crises of faith. Maybe an adult child has decided to walk away.  A divorce catches us unaware. A great job suddenly vanishes. A health crisis turns a life upside-down, and everything just…stops. In these moments, we might experience shock. Numbness. Anger. Grief. It’s easy to define these situations as curses, but if we shift our perspective, we can begin to see them as gifts—opportunities for growth that reveal our weaknesses and flaws. Just as lemons can be transformed into refreshing lemonade, our trials can lead to a sweeter, more fulfilling life when approached with the right mindset.

One of the central themes in Frank Forrest’s awesome song, "Lemonade," is the idea that God uses our struggles to refine us. The Bible is filled with verses that highlight the importance of perseverance and character development through trials. Romans 5:3-4 states, “Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.” I certainly don’t fall into the “rejoice in my suffering” category, but this promise reassures us that our hardships are not in vain, but part of a divine plan to shape our character and deepen our faith. For me, it’s much easier to accept a trial if I know there’s light on the flip side of the shadows.

We often become blind to our own faults and weaknesses, making it difficult to recognize areas in our lives that need improvement. A challenging situation can shake us out of our complacency and force us to confront our shortcomings! Although painful, these moments of discomfort can be the catalyst for significant personal growth. This shift in mindset allows us to cultivate gratitude even in the midst of difficulty.

In my life personally, how I respond to challenges has become the thing that defines me. It’s a slow process, this life-shifting approach; but oh-so-worth it!  Stepping out of my own way and allowing God to work has been the privilege of my life. Also…the hardest thing of my life.

In my books, I always write with “lemonade” in mind for my characters but find myself leaning hard into the complex evil that manifests in certain people. A darkness typically disguised as charm, beauty, competence. These characters are crazy fun to write. But always, always, always…the light wins. I really love the way Frank Forrest puts it: “But now I’m out here feeling free, I’m chillin’ in the shade…Life gave me some lemons, but hey, my Jesus He be makin’ lemonade!
